The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. Summer Scholarship Program Makes a Big Impact on Families & Volunteers

Junior League Supports & Empowers YWCA Families in Polytechnic Heights

The preschool classroom at the YWCA Polytechnic Child Development Center was packed with people. YWCA staff had never seen so many families attend an open house at the center before. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings crowded around the miniature tables with their three and four-year-old preschoolers as they decorated time capsules made of pizza boxes together. Members of Junior League of Fort Worth were busy handing out supplies and passing around nutritious refreshments. YWCA teachers were scattered around the room speaking with parents and preparing for the program. It was the open house to kick off the YWCA/JLFW Summer Scholars Program 2013, and the center was buzzing with excitement.

YWCA Fort Worth & Tarrant County received a grant award this year from The Junior League of Fort Worth to provide summer scholarships for homeless and low-income children in the Polytechnic Heights community of Fort Worth. The YWCA applied for $20,000 to help cover the cost of high-quality early childhood education and care for children in the prekindergarten classes of the Polytechnic Child Development Center for the summer; however JLFW approved the grant at $42,000, more than doubling the original request.
